About Us

OUR GREAT FOUNDER

KIZHAKKUMVELITHARA KURIAN CHACKO

K.K.Chacko, born into an ancient middle class family, in a village of Kerala, had scarcely any chance to be acquainted with any contemporary forms of art. A born sculptor, he nurtured his inborn talent to create wonders with his hands giving life to many beautiful elegant wooden statues. His whims and fancy caught the sight of marvelous paintings that adorned the ceiling of the churchs and a disdain for the conventional statues that ornamented many of the temples. He gave up his teaching career to fully devote himself to the art he adored.

A self taught sculptor, Chacko's works are characterized by a degree of finish and openness of forms that were to be supplanted by more monumental conceptions, unprecedented in its scope, audacity of design and conveyance of energies that seem cosmic in their intensity and breath. K.K.Chacko specialised in Christian statues and developed a distinctive style that were much in demand throughout the churches in India and even abroad. His characteristic works are marked by solidity and simplicity of form that led him to be a recepient of many awards and titles, even after his death in 1981.

K.K.Chacko was accepted nation wide for his artistic imagination and a degree of creative energy unprecedented and unsurpassed in the annals of human endeavour. His works survives in many temples and he, who was regarded by his contemporaries and near-contemporaries as perhaps the greatest sculptor of his era, has given way to his son, M.C.Kurian and eventually his grandson, Jacob Kurian.
